This is an old revision of the document!
GMs and Crew
The GMs are the people who write, run and moderate Reference II. We can be contacted via email or by using @GM on the Reference II Discord server.
Crew members are people who play NPCs in Uptimes, but don't have the other responsibilities of the GMs. We are looking for Crew members to take part in the game – if this is something you are interested in doing, please see the Crew section below.
GMs
The NPCs listed here will be the NPCs we play in the Out-of-Story world in Reference II. We will be playing more NPCs during Uptimes, but these will change between Uptimes so are not listed here.
GM Emma (CAMPO)
OC Pronouns: she/her
Contact: gm_emma@referenceii.oxfordrpg.com, or her personal email if you need to talk to her about the conduct of another GM, as outlined in the CAT Policy.
Main Themes: To what extent can something simulated be considered real? And also everything else.
If you could use the Bookworm once, and only once, which text would you use for the Story?: The script for Groundhog Day, so I could find out how much timber a groundhog would throw if a groundhog were able to throw timber.
| NPC | Pronouns | Description |
|---|---|---|
| Laszlo Arbim | any | A Senior HR Director at Alusia, Laszlo is the head of 'client appeasement' at the Exhibition, as well as being in charge of planning and organisation for the event. |
GM Heather
OC Pronouns: she/her
Contact: gm_heather@referenceii.oxfordrpg.com
Main Themes: How do our experiences in the fictional world shape us in the real world?
If you could use the Bookworm once, and only once, which text would you use for the Story?: My Climate Statistics lecture notes. The graphs were so cool, and maybe if I experienced the theorems, I'd actually understand them…
| NPC | Pronouns | Description |
|---|---|---|
| Linden Fox | he/him | The technician at the Alusia Foundation, who is responsible for the upkeep and setup of the Bookworm. |
GM Izzy
OC Pronouns: any (except it)
Contact: gm_izzy@referenceii.oxfordrpg.com
Main Themes: Nefarious Hijinks and Adventure.
If you could use the Bookworm once, and only once, which text would you use for the Story?: A Hitchhikers guide to the galaxy, because somehow it feels like the safest option for going to space, man I love space.
| NPC | Pronouns | Description |
|---|---|---|
| Al Unusu | she/they | The barista of the Alusia Foundation Café, the only thing meaner than their coffee is their attitude towards annoying customers. |
GM Cali
OC Pronouns: she/they
Contact: gm_cali@referenceii.oxfordrpg.com
Main Themes: What makes something real? What makes someone human?
If you could use the Bookworm once, and only once, which text would you use for the Story?: I'd see how much contradictory AU fanfic I could cram in size 1pt font onto a ream of paper and watch the system try its best to decipher it all. Which fandom? Who knows!
| NPC | Pronouns | Description |
|---|---|---|
| Quinn Hartley | she/her | The sweet, old librarian who manages a large part of the Alusia foundation's library and book collection, and who is always accompanied by a bowl of sherbet lemons. |
GM Michael
OC Pronouns: any
Contact: gm_michael@referenceii.oxfordrpg.com
Main Themes: Responsibility. I swear I will be a responsible GM!!!
If you could use the Bookworm once, and only once, which text would you use for the Story?:
Probably something esoteric, just to test the boundaries of the system. So… maybe a lawn mower instruction manual?
| NPC | Pronouns | Description |
|---|---|---|
| Alex Girard | they/them | A recent graduate and a semiconductor research scientist at Alusia Foundation for the last three years. They take pride in knowing the ins and outs of electronics of the Bookworm, or at least the bits they've had the time to study. |
GM Ben
OC Pronouns: they/them
Contact: gm_ben@referenceii.oxfordrpg.com
Main Themes: Sacrifice and escapism.
If you could use the Bookworm once, and only once, which text would you use for the Story?: A Doctor Who novelisation, probably 11th or 12th Doctor.
| NPC | Pronouns | Description |
|---|---|---|
| Rory Smith | he/him | A security guard working for the Alusia Foundation, responsible for escorting the attendees of the Exhibition around the facility. |
Crew
Reference II is also looking for Crew members. Crew will take part in Uptimes only – as a Crew member, you will be tasked with playing NPCs in Stories.
As the GMs would like the game to be as fun for you as possible, we will try to take personal preferences into account when assigning NPCs to you. NPC briefs will not be all-encompassing so there will be plenty of chances to get creative with the roles you get. There will be an opportunity to refuse a role you're offered if it makes you uncomfortable for any reason. Ideally, please let us know why you're refusing a role so we can make sure to avoid giving you similar options in the future. However, you are under no obligation to explain or justify your choices. We trust you to refuse sensibly to maintain your comfort.
You are also welcome to Crew for as many sessions as you'd like. Please let us know when filling out the Crew Form what sessions you'll be available for, so we can write Stories accordingly.
If you would like to Crew for Reference II, please fill out the Crew Form by 19:00 BST on Monday 6th July. If you would like to Crew and have missed this deadline, please reach out to the GM team – if there are spaces remaining, you will be able to Crew.
As we have a limited number of spaces for Crew, we may have to run a ballot for Crew alongside the ballot to play. This ballot will be done separately to the ballot to play – selection will be carried out at random with the following preference order:
- Applicants who have not balloted to play Reference II.
- Applicants who have balloted to play Reference II and would like to Crew if they are unable to play.
If you are in the second group, please fill out both the Crew Form form and the Ballot Form. The Ballot to play will be drawn first, so if you are assigned to play Reference II, your application to Crew will be disregarded. All applications to Crew that are received after 19:00 on Monday 6th July will be handled on a first-come-first-served basis.
Crew members will be listed below.
