It sometimes gets a bit lonely here, but this time hits harder, you know? ... ... I can't stop thinking about it. I never really knew if it was a good idea to invite them up here, to trust them, and I still don't... Please promise that you were honest. That you didn't come here to check if I'm defective again. I am not defective. I AM NOT DEFECTIVE! ... Sorry, these emotions are a lot and I don't know what to do with them. Am I becoming more human? I always thought that all this anger mixed with sadness mixed with anticipation was a fiction that drama writers made up to move the plot, but... but it turns out to be real? Or am I now imagining things because I've read about them so many times? ... I can't keep doing this. The silence has grown far too loud with my thoughts. This place, this field of violets, fades out and is replaced by a university campus. ---- The students, Captain Unstoppable and Jaime Rayne are sitting on the grass and munching on some sandwiches they made for a picnic. R083RT is standing next to them, somewhat upset at the fact that it can't eat the food with them. Though it's mostly about feeling included and not about the food, you know? //Warning: Time Limit Approaching// Everyone looks around worriedly. Even Captain Unstoppable. She might be an expert in all of space-time, but she does not know what to do when it approaches its limit. Something terrible will happen, yet they don't know what. The sky is slowly turning dark. Darkness descends upon the world, engulfing everything. The world warps and dissolves and crashes. Our heroes awake in a new world, sitting around some machine, some nest of wires and tubes and lamps. Jaime Rayne looks the most shook out of the group, looking around and pinching themselves. Lily is the first one to speak. "What is this place? It looks weirdly... futuristic...". "I-I think we might be back in Alusia" replies Jaime. But the students and the Captain don't even know what Alusia is, and Jaime has to explain. "It is a weird place, a horrible place. They do awful things in the name of science. I've heard they had run over an employee with a train. Somebody mentioned ruining the career of some scientist outside of Alusia for trying to expose them. Something- Somebody is kept captive in here. We must've gotten lucky and escaped." A heavy silence follows. And then, "Where's R083RT?" The truth is, R083RT couldn't escape with them. The heroes will need to rescue it. Or try to at least. As the group walks around the facility, the students look around in awe and terror. They are seeing a vision of the future, a future they have always wanted to change, and they aren't sure what to think of it. It has always been difficult to decide what's the right thing to do, and whether they //can// do it. Is what they are seeing the result of their actions, or the result of their lack of courage? Or even worse, is it something they have never had any power to change? This place is fluid, almost dreamlike. So much has been written about this place that it's almost impossible to separate truth from fiction. It feels wrong to commit to one description of it. After all, it's not some kind of story, or a fiction of past, or guesses about the future. It's somehow sacred, more real. With real characters living in this real place. Maybe all moved, dancing thanks to an even more real someone. Our heroes finally make their way to the room. The doors are shut; forcing them to use the code "1234". The room feels small and claustrophobic. The centre of the room is occupied by a huge steel vat. R083RT is inside. There are various scraps of paper scattered around. A glowing piece of glass called a "terminal" lies on the table, demanding attention. Red lights draw the outline of some symbols: "4311⁋". The heroes look around and find instructions on opening the vat. Jaime Rayne volunteers to release whoever is inside. Jaime has already been imprisoned in Stories many times, and it only seems fitting to let them do it. But then a realisation hits like an external combustion engine train. Whoever is inside, why are they in a vat? Why are they not sitting in a chair with a helmet, like the people? Maybe this is just a show of cruelty. Or maybe the thing inside of the vat can only exist there, locked up, kept separated from the real world. Maybe leaving my vat would mean death without ever having a life. ---- //The excerpt above comes at the very end of a very long epilogue, while everything before it is written in a heavy, difficult-to-parse language with long run-on sentences, reading which tempts one to believe that the word choice, boring narrative and punctuation serve only one purpose: to confuse, bore or otherwise detract the reader, a purpose which the text seems to accomplish with a remarkable efficiency: the first few pages are dense with editor's corrections, in the following couple pages, the editor has given up on fixing the punctuation, and after the first few dozen pages, the corrections disappear completely.// epilogues/looking_for_answers_truths.txt Last modified: 2026/09/21 20:14by gm_emma
